What grades do you serve?

We serve grades 6-8. We are the only stand-alone middle school on the near-west side of Indianapolis and that’s because we believe students in these grades deserve curated education, support and activities.

What is the school day?

The school opens at 7:30am, classes are in session from 8:00am-3:15pm.

What’s different about Vanguard Collegiate?

We are a small school making a big impact on the lives of individual students. We have an amazing staff who does whatever is necessary to move students along their educational journey to the next stage. We know our students and families personally and work to meet their needs. As our mission says, we are unapologetically focused on the academic success of our scholars! We believe every one of our scholars can succeed in middle school, high school and college, and we’re building within them the knowledge and skills to do so.

Do you have after school programming?

Yes we do! Our partners at the Hawthorne Community Center offer a variety of after-school programs: https://www.hawthornecenter.org/programs/childcare/#y1. When you enroll at Vanguard Collegiate, you also enroll in their programming and resource offerings.

Where do your students come from?

Our scholars come from all over the West Side of Indianapolis. We also offer transportation for any families from the eastside of Indianapolis.

How much homework will my student have?

Although the amount of homework given is determined by each teacher individually, please expect your scholar to have homework in multiple subject areas at least 3 times a week.

Do you provide transportation to and from school?

Yes, we have our own bus and we determine the route every year depending on where scholars need to be picked up and dropped off. There is no additional fee for riding our bus.

Do you require students to wear uniforms?

Yes. You will receive 2 free uniform shirts when you enroll, and you can purchase more shirts through the school for $10 each. If you refer other families who enroll at Vanguard Collegiate, you will receive additional uniform shirts for free.

What is the uniform?

On top, scholars must wear our uniform shirt (purchased through school) and on bottom they can wear either black or khaki pants (supplied by family). No jeans or leggings.

Do you provide lunch and what is the cost?

We provide free lunch for everyone.

What’s expected of me as a parent?

We need parents to communicate, be responsive, support school policies, and encourage their children academically and behaviorally.

What’s your approach to students who learn differently?

First and foremost, we’re here to help your child succeed academically. We recognize that students will enter school with a wide range of academic proficiency. We will ensure students receive the necessary support to reach our rigorous goals through detailed analysis of our assessment data and clear action plans informed by that analysis.

To supplement classroom instruction, we will incorporate an hour of literacy support and an hour of math support daily, as both a Reading and a Math Power Hour. During each Power Hour, students will be strategically placed in small groups based on skill, and groups will rotate through a station rotation model. Scholars will receive small group instruction directly from teachers and work independently on their own level and at their own pace using research- based, blended learning platforms.

We will use a Response to Intervention (RTI) model to identify individual student needs, including but not limited to, English Language Learners and Special Education students. We will provide the necessary services specified in the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015.

What is your Disciplinary Philosophy (Suspensions & Expulsions)?

Vanguard Collegiate strives to maintain a safe, structured, joyous, and academically challenging school environment where kids feel free to have teachable moments. Our culture of success establishes structures that ensure all students are safe, learning time is sacred, and anticipates/prepares for the most challenging situations and conditions.

Rooted in our school’s core values, our discipline policy is consistent, sets clear expectations, fosters community, and protects instructional time. Our policy is in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. It will be implemented with fidelity to ensure the success of our scholars. In our highly structured school environment, we hold students accountable to our expectations while simultaneously developing an achievement-oriented student community.
