Allow us to re-introduce one of our most inspiring teachers: Mr. Ferguson. This isn’t your typical profile. We’re getting into Mr. Ferguson’s motivations, passions, and more. If you’ve been curious about our educators, you don’t want to miss this!

When did you know you wanted to be an educator?

My middle school principal was my motivation. She took me in as a minor while going through the foster system. That showed me educators are life changers.

Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

Ms.Terry Clark was my favorite teacher. She taught art and showed us so much about life and what to expect when we get to the real world. Her loving and caring spirit carried over into my teaching.

What are some of the biggest challenges facing middle school students today, and how do you help your students navigate these challenges?

Some challenges middle schoolers face today are peer pressure, self-entitlement and lack of accountability.

Can you describe your teaching style and strategies to engage and motivate your students in the classroom?

My style of teaching is a Reggio approach with the curriculum standards in mind. A lot of understanding and compassion. This shows my children that I care about them personally.

How do you communicate with parents and caregivers about their child’s academic progress and social-emotional development, and what kind of support do you provide to help students succeed?

I like to build a rapport with each family individually. I always find a middle ground to express my feelings about the child at hand rather than educational or emotional. I always keep it honest and straightforward.

What else would you like us to know about YOU?

I come from the city’s urban areas and lived in foster homes until I was 17 years old. I got emancipated and pushed myself to further my education and living experiences to become a great man and that’s what got me here today.
