Our fifth to eighth grade scholars had an incredible opportunity this summer — learning to sail!

Half of the sailing camp participants were from Vanguard Collegiate of Indianapolis. Four of our scholars flew to Chicago for a two-week adventure including sailing lessons, visiting the Museum of Science and Industry and exploring the Lincoln Zoo.

This parent-led initiative by Youth Empowered introduced campers to first aid, CPR, swimming and sailing. On the weekend we engaged in STEM and nature activities, as well as seeing more of Chicago’s natural spaces.

In order to learn to sail, our scholars had to get CPR-certified and take swimming lessons. The first week of camp included learning nautical terms (like jibing and tacking), parts of the boat (port and starboard) and how to turn. The second week focused on the main event — sailing. The skills learned over these two weeks are skills every scholar can apply throughout their lives; skills like patience, respect, responsibility and awareness. Cooperation and teamwork are also vital to a successful sail. The physical skills attained from swimming and sailing include agility, focus, and endurance. Learning to sail can impact fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and flexibility.

For Vanguard, physical health matters as much as mental health and academic effort. We love to see our scholars thrive in new experiences and enjoy the impactful opportunities summer can provide.  Middle school is a time for accountability and adventure;  exploring what it means to leaders, in thought, word and action.
