Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all remaining enslaved people were truly freed. The arrival of troops came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln.

Vanguard Collegiate of Indianapolis and scholars at Juneteenth event together

We joined the Indy Juneteenth Celebration because we will not miss any opportunity to recognize the value of black lives — then and now. Vanguard Collegiate of Indianapolis is a public middle school by Black people, for Black people. We are committed to purposeful, quality instruction, rigorous curriculum and important character development. We equip our 5th – 8th grade scholars with critical thinking skills, integrity, and a sense of personal and social responsibility. Juneteenth is our Independence Day.

Vanguard Collegiate of Indianapolis and Congressman Andre Carson at Juneteenth event

This year we joined Mayor Hogsett, Congressman Andre Carson, Indy Juneteenth’s Co-Founders James & Twjonia Webb, and other community leaders to celebrate by highlighting the stories of those who came before us — who suffered, fought, resided on this land and believed in a better future. Indy Juneteenth is both a non-profit organization and the name for this event; the largest Juneteenth celebration in Indiana. Indy Juneteenth is an important friend of Vanguard Collegiate of Indianapolis and through their community outreach and non-profit efforts, Indy Juneteenth reminds us that:

“…African Americans still fight for equality and justice today, we use Juneteenth as a benchmark to remind us of our ancestors and that freedom for all is a God given right to all human beings.”

At Vanguard Collegiate of Indianapolis, we are a school community because we are here to be of service. We founded our free public middle school to instill strong academic pride in fifth to eighth graders of the Near Westside — alongside deep character foundations and meaningful ethics. It takes a village to raise a child, to educate the next generation of leaders and to celebrate the brutally hard won freedom of enslaved Americans. We are proud to share this day with our beloved community and our scholars…leaders in thought, word and action! Enroll with us… today!
