Vanguard is intentionally and joyfully active in our community. From our school leaders in the news, winning awards and joining podcasts, to our students learning and cooking in a local, professional kitchen, or exploring the zoo. Or via our Community Circle where we invite prominent Black and Latinx professionals to tell our students about their path to success — community is all around us.

Service Learning

We also partner with ProAct Indy to elevate and benefit our beloved community. Vanguard scholars are able to jump-in and get hands on;  while increasing awareness of systemic issues. It’s more than awareness though,  ProAct Indy imbues a lens of well-intentioned effort — encouraging every scholar to take action. And as Vanguards, we are first and foremost  — leaders in thought, word and action.

ProAct Indy’s mission is straightforward and purposeful:

“We are a pioneering organization committed to standing in the gap for vulnerable populations while empowering youth to actively transform their communities. We bring together organizations in the city – helping groups cross social, racial, and economic boundaries – through meaningful service projects & social equity training.”

Capstone Projects

Service learning and capstone projects are an important, and differentiating, part of our public middle school model. Along with daily tutoring, extended time on core subjects, social emotional learning and character development, our scholars embrace their voices and sense of self through serving and giving back to our near Westside community.

This year, our graduating class of eighth graders teamed up with ProAct Indy and K1ds Count for their capstone project. Together, they chose a morning of clean-up for the Hawthorne neighborhood. Held on June 4th, this day is extra significant because it was the last day of in-person school. Our scholars began their graduation day being of service to their neighbors, their school, their families — their community.

Preparing for the Future — Always!

We thank ProAct Indy and K1ds Count for how they teach schools, corporations and nonprofits about the path forward to empowered lives for children and families all over Indianapolis.  By exposing today’s youth to what they might not otherwise experience — racism, cycles of poverty, and more ProAct Indy actively prioritizes people; and we are here for it. Our scholars know they can’t just complain about issues, they each have the skills and ability to impact and improve the future. Right here. Starting today.
